12 Inches of Snow In Mammoth Today - Putting it In Perspective

Well the weather forecasters where right. Mammoth Mountain reported that they received 12 inches of snow in the last 24 hours!

As I thought about the snow falling today, I realized us Sierra lovers will react to the snowfall in different ways.  I can see at least three different groups with three different perspectives:
  • Group One - Boys of Summer - Bummed That Summer is Over
  • Group Two - Skiers - Dancing in the Streets that Opening Day is November 10 and Mammoth just got 13 inches of snow already
  • Group Three - Photographers - Confused and cannot figure out if they are Happy or Sad (Sad - wiped out Fall Colors or Happy - Wonderful picture opportunity of a winter storm breaking pp over the Sierras)

Group One - Boys of Summer

I have to admit, I am a member of this group.  I hate the summer solstice.  It means the days start getting shorter and there is only freakin X more days till Christmas.  The members of this group like to hang on to:
  • Long days
  • Warm weather
  • Hiking in the high country

No Photoshop it was really that bleak in the
Mammoth Vons parking lot
This group feels robbed this year.  There was so much snow last winter, it seemed, there was no summer at all in the high country . Winter never left.  The snow never melted and it is already snowing again.

With 13 inches of snow, the folks who live year round in Mammoth are having flashbacks of the long, long winter last year!

Group Two - Skiers/Snowboarders
Not my picture but it sure fit the story!

Skiers/Snowbarders are addicted to skiing.  They are just like fisherman and can never ski enough.  They always want a longer season.

Oh and they enjoy stealing time away from Group One.  Especially like they did this year skiing through the 4th of July!
I really cannot blame 'em and since one of the purposes of this blog is to rent my Condo Snow Flower 13 so I grudgingly don't mind a long ski season either!

Group Three - Photographers

Owens River morning after a late night snow storm
Now I am definitely a full card carrying member of this group.  Personally, I am conflicted as it being close to the peak Fall Colors I should be in the Sierras right now with it .  Unfortunately, I am not and won't be able to get to Mammoth for a couple of weeks.  With the short Fall Color Season and snow storms like we had today the Fall Colors party maybe over by the time we arrive!

On the other hand there is nothing more beautiful than the Sierras right after a snow storm.  The photographers  lucky enough to be in the Sierras right now are having a field day.  Those of us that are not are kicking ourselves for not being there.

So let me know what group you fall in or if you are in another group all together?
