First Snow Possible This Week

It is hard to believe summer is over and fall/winter is already upon us in the Sierras.  The NOAA forecast is predicting  a strong storm and a chance of snow later this week in areas above 7,000 feet!

A quote from the NOAA Stie for Mammoth:

STRONG LOW PRESSURE OVER THE GULF OF ALASKA WILL MOVE ACROSS THE
WESTERN U.S. NEXT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. THIS WILL BRING MUCH
COOLER TEMPERATURES WITH AFTERNOON HIGHS DROPPING INTO THE 60S AND
LOWER 70S BY TUESDAY ACROSS WESTERN NEVADA WITH 50S IN THE SIERRA.
WEDNESDAY...A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE REGION WITH
HIGHS BOTH WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY ONLY REACHING THE 50S AND 60S IN
LOWER ELEVATIONS AND 40S IN THE SIERRA.

WINDS WILL INCREASE AHEAD OF THE MAIN STORM WITH POTENTIAL IMPACTS
TO TRAVEL ON AREA HIGHWAYS. BASED ON THE LATEST PROJECTIONS...THE
STRONGEST WINDS ARE MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT
WITH POTENTIAL FOR GUSTS ABOVE 45 MPH IN LOWER ELEVATIONS WITH
RIDGE GUSTS NEAR 100 MPH IN THE SIERRA.

IN ADDITION...MODERATE TO HEAVY PRECIPITATION IN THE SIERRA IS LIKELY
TO IMPACT THE REGION BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK...WITH MOUNTAIN
SNOW MAINLY ABOVE 7000 FEET. DEPENDING ON PRECIPITATION INTENSITY
AND TIMING...TRAVEL OVER THE HIGHER SIERRA PASSES MAY BECOME DIFFICULT
DUE TO SNOW AND REDUCED VISIBILITY WEDNESDAY EVENING THROUGH EARLY
THURSDAY MORNING.

This definitely will impact the Fall Colors wiping some sections out and making others turn quicker.
So if you are planning a trip to see the fall colors you best watch the weather and fall color reports as things can and will change rapidly.
